October Summary

October Summary

October is a shit month back in Queensland. It’s a dead zone between the end of the rugby and the start of the cricket. The fishing’s poor and the surf drops off. My weekends would lack context. I’d saunter about in social purgatory, catatonic, moistened in a drool of lethargy. Time itself became viscous. But, this year, I’m not in Queensland…

I started the month in southern Thailand – riding a ferry up from Langkawi. I made landfall on Koh Lipe and stayed for a while. While there, I made friends with plankton and the king of all fish.

Next, it was back to the mainland. I met a friend, and we rolled through Trang and Krabi. Then tragedy hit. In a brazen attack, I was slapped down by Islamic State. The enemy had evolved. This time, they’d planted anthrax in my salad. It was unprovoked, devastating, and inventive. Scarily, they’d managed to weaponize paw paw. I lay low for a while. Then, stricken, I pressed northward – plugged up with fistfuls of meds and Blutac. I’ll never let the terrorists win.

After a few days in Bangkok, I had to move on. Trust me: there’s only so many rip starts you can buy without risking serious disfigurement. As such, Ayutthaya and Sukhothai were a welcome change of pace. They offered spiritual succour to my rampant hedonism.

I ended the month in Chiang Mai – taking in the lantern fest and a bit of the jungle. And finally, as my visa counted down, I said peace-out to Thailand and what’s-doing Phnom Penh. October may be shit in Queensland, but, this year, Thailand was the shit indeed.
